November is National Child Safety & Protection Month

November is a time to be thankful for all of the blessings in our lives and for many of us; one of the biggest blessings is our children. This month is Child Safety and Protection Month. Take a few minutes to evaluate the safety of your home and update any safety needs. It is much easier to prevent accidents than to deal with the aftermath hence, properly protecting your home is important.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when making your home and vehicle safe:

Vehicle Safety: Regulations regarding child safety restraint systems vary. Make sure you are familiar with the requirements in your area. Check that car seats and boosters are properly installed. If you are unsure how to install them most local police and fire departments can help.

Home Tips: Here are a few things to check in your home to help keep your children safe.

  • Prevent falls by installing bright lights on stairs and landings. Keep areas near stairs free of clutter and toys.
  • Medications, cleaners, and other harmful substances should be kept out of reach of children or in a locked cabinet. This is especially important with young kids.
  • Keep your local poison control number handy.
  • Test your smoke alarms on a regular basis.
  • Conduct fire drills.
  • Do not leave a stove unattended.
  • Burners and ovens can be a danger to children.
  • Use back burners and always turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
  • Adjust your water heater to 120F to prevent burns.
  • All outlets should be covered with outlet covers.

    • With toddlers and young babies, the best way to make sure your house is safe is to get down at the eye level of your child. Crawl around the floor to get an idea of what is at their eye level. It may seem silly but can be crucial to keep the little ones safe.
